With all the horribly upsetting things going on in With all the horribly upsetting things going on in the world, it often feels incredibly trivial and silly to get on here and post about our little songs and our little shows. For years I almost only wanted to write songs about the state of the world—about injustice and the things tearing us apart—as a direct response to the struggle. In more recent years, I’ve wanted to write a lot of music with lighter themes, things that can help me as the writer, us as the band, and you as the listener, get some reprieve from the heaviness of the world. But sometimes it just feels silly or selfish or tone deaf. I do think there’s real value in music and art that gives you a break from the heaviness of the world. And I think there’s real value in continuing to make art in the face of injustice and cruelty and heartbreak. There are days where it feels like a type of resistance—to try to put something beautiful or happy or peaceful into this chaotic world, or even just to keep on doing what you love and not let the sadness beat you down. But I don’t want to sound grandiose about this—it’s also how we make a living, how we get to keep doing the thing we love. There is an element of selfishness to this, for sure. Sometimes we use this band and this platform to (hopefully) push the world slightly toward a saner direction; sometimes we take action to that end in our personal lives; sometimes we just try to escape by watching a dumb movie or making a lighthearted song or listening to a playlist of “music to study to” because it really does seem to relax our nervous systems. So yeah, here’s a video of me playing our new song at the beach, filmed quite a while back when I was writing it. I hope you have a mellow morning today, you deserve it. Much Love, Silas
