I saw a documentary last night called First They C I saw a documentary last night called First They Came For My College, about New College of Florida where I went to school. NCF was an amazing locus of progressive, independent, intellectual thought and a safe haven for all kinds of people. There was a hostile takeover of the college by the political leadership of Florida in an effort to turn the liberal school into a conservative one and use that as a blueprint for takeovers at other schools. (An episode of Jon Oliver’s show was dedicated to this story a couple of months ago… worth checking out.) The documentary follows the story of the takeover, the destruction of this place I love so much and that played a big part in making me who I am. It also beautifully captures the spirit of New College, its students and professors, and the eloquent and brave people fighting against the takeover. It was so well done and so emotional. The joy and the heartbreak is strong. It made me feel so proud and nostalgic and lucky and sad and hopeful and hopeless. I hope you’ll see this documentary.
